Myanmar Bans Sales of Chickens and Eggs to Prevent Spread of AI
February 10, 2010

Myanmar:  The Myanmar government has banned sales of chickens and their eggs since the end of last week in six markets, about seven miles from a farm in a small town on the outskirts of Yangon, where an outbreak of bird flu occurred.  The move was taken as one of several control measures against the spread of the disease, said the weekly news in the report Newsweek Myanmar, Tuesday (9/2).

The spread of H5N1 avian influenza in Myanmar returned nearly two years after the country was declared free of the disease, with one case in a small town in Mayangong, at the beginning of this month, according to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Developer-breeding and Veterinary (LBVD).  Sudden deaths of several chickens were found on a farm, where 2500 chickens have died due to suspected avian influenza, the highly pathogenic (HPAI), after laboratory tests, the report said.

Society also called for increased measures of bio-security, changes in farming systems, avoidance of dark imports, transport and trading of chickens and their products, and accelerating the reports of suspected cases of bird flu.
