I finally watched I am Legend. I loved it!
This is my second “pandemic realm” type of movie, the other one, Invaders with Niclole Kidman. I’ve been informed that there is another movie out, Right At Your Door.
Hollywood seems to be picking up on survival/pandemic type movies. Why? Because survival type movies sell. Why do they sell so well? People are drawn to these type of movies, but I see little impact on the movie goer as to the possiblity of a real pandemic threat. Does Hollywood really have a true, realist assesment of what a pandemic would be like, from start to finish? No. Not in my book they don’t. The movie Outbreak wasn’t even close, and I thought that was a good movie. Hollywood likes their neat, tidy, happy endings, and unfortunately in the real world, neat, tidy, happy ending will not be in the script for us should a pandemic hit. I want Hollywood to make a real pandemic movie, one that would leave movie goers in the mindset of they need to stock food and water. That they need to take pandemic very seriously. Hollywood has the capability to leave them shaking in their shoes. So why don’t they?
It seems weird to me, that people love to watch stuff about emergency situations, pandemics, plauges, ect., but are not motivated in the very least to prepare themselves for whatever emergency situation that arises. They know that emergency situations are very real, some have even lived through them, and still people don’t prepare. They still like watching those programs though. Watching is not taking action folks. In my opinion, the informational messaged failed in it’s intent to help people, because people didn’t get the message: prepare yourselves for emergencies. Why does these programs and shows fail at getting this all important message across to people? If these programs, like Discovery, who air these kind of shows, isn’t it not the responsibility of the show to not only inform people about pandemic, emergencies, natural disasters, but to also show people how to prepare? They’ve never done a program on how to prepare and survive. So what’s wrong with this picture? They’ll give you all the scare, and leave you hanging.
Get use to it
It’s been my position all along, that if we are exposed regularly to prepardness clips on t.v. that it won’t people will not panic when they get “some bad news and told to have food and water on hand.” They will not panic if they are regularly exposed to news of a current situation, like in Indonesia. They do panic when they are told not to worry and “the big one hits.” The “nothing to worry about” makes me want to panic.
Look, we are constantly exposed to credit card commercials, pill commercials, cloths, shopping, jewelry, car commercials. We are bombarded with stuff like that. It’s apart of our culture. Prepardness commercials and shows should be too. Survival is apart of living, and we should have information on how to survive emergencies, pandemic, natural and disasters. This is sorely lacking in our culture.
A while back, I started a diary at the Fluwiki, “What Are You Doing Just At Home(JAH) Pandemic”
http://www.newfluwiki2.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1400 This is part one. I asked people to briefly believe pandemic is here, it’s mandatory SIP(stay in place). What would they be doing? How well do they think they would handle things? The scenerios that people wrote were excellant. A real assesment to a real human condition: survival.
What Are You Doing Just At Home (JAH) Pamdenic-part 2
Hollywood, Discovery, and all these other programs, need to asses the real human condition. That of survival.
until next time,
(I had planned on doing this earlier today, but puppy’s been sick today. Just as mysteriously as it came on, it has went away. )
I have planned on setting up a “pandemic flu central” at home, should something of that nature ever happen. Right now, my “office” is in a non family location, meaning I’m the only one who really uses the spot my computer is at. O.K., it’s cottontop’s little corner of the world! 😉
Should something of a phenomenon take place, such as pandemic flu, some weird alien virus, or anything else that could fall under “pandemic,”, I’m moving my little corner of the world, out of hiding and into the dining room, which is connected to the kitchen, and living room. That way, we’ll be able to view the t.v as events happens, and check my sites and news on the net, and talk on the phone, without being stuffed in my little corner like sardines!!
I’m a sucker for maps, so I’ll probably hang my map of the world and the U.S. up to track developing events. (this must come from tracking the Indo news, because I never use to do this.) The phone will be ringing (and it’ll be my mother wanting me to come home! “Yes Mother. I’ll leave N.Y. and travel back to Texas, in the middle of a pandemic) Phone calls will be made to check on family and friends. We will be glued to the t.v., and I’ll be glued to the ‘puter. The activity will be choatic as we decide what last minute things need to be done. Papers will be all over the table, as I’m a paper person and I can’t think unless I have alot of papers…..everywhere!
Underneath those papers, will be my emergency notebook. It is perhaps the only thing in my life I’m organized in. I wing everything else! 😉 I know there will be things that still need to be done, and to be purchased. There always is. Preppers strive for the unobtainable; To be finished.
Pandemic central will stay in place as long as there is a need for it. Probably until we loose power. It’ll be a very important place for my family and become a center of our lives for as long as the situation mandates it to be. It might be a information station for friends stopping by to see if we’ve heard anything, and to get new information from what they’ve heard and follow up on that.
I do realize that the net will be near impossible to use in such an event. It will be all I have, as I won’t rely on the t.v. or radio for a realistic interpretation of events. I’ll need to know what’s going on everywhere, not just locally or in the states, but places like Indonesia, China, ect. My hope is to assess the situation before the net becomes swamped, and decide what our next step will be.
Why it’s so hard to guage where us and H5N1 stands
While the regulars to the flu boards already know the answer to this, for those who don’t it pretty much stands like this. Indonesia and China do not/are not wanting to send samples of their H5N1 virus’ collected from positive patients, and poultry. It’s just as inportant to get samples from dead poultry as from infected humans. Without the sequences of the virus, we are at a loss to know exactly if H5N1 is mutated, if there is one or more new strains, and what areas these strains are infecting. We could literally watch this viurs move around if these two countries would just cooperate. But it’s not as simple as that, and for the time being, we the people, are left watching, and waiting. What concerns me, o.k., scares me, is that when the samples are finally sent, and sequences are released(should they do so), will we see the mutation that will put us one step closer? Will we see one or two more new strains? It’s been quiet some time since we’ve seen any sequences, so the new set should be very interesing. There is suppose to be 2 samples being sent to WHO from either China or Indonesia. (sorry, it’s late and I can’t remember)
Thanks to everyone who has stopped by.
Until next time,

If you get a chance, I’d recommend “The Invasion” with Nichole Kidman. I thought the way they used “pandemic flu” was clever to disguise something else. My family and I really enjoyed it, and it prompted some great conversation with Hubby and DD.
Until next time
On the fluwiki2, we have discussed SIP, or staying in place. Some choose to call it JAH, or just at home. This scenerio is a scarey one, especially if you have children and indoor pets. I for one don’t think I’d be able to tolerate SIP too long, given that I don’t like being cooped up. I have a 14 and a 5 year old, a min pin, and a Hubby. They all get underfoot anyway, but what about during SIP? How could we handle it, especially not know how long it would be, and I’m talking mandatory SIP.
I have situations come up, where I’m forced to think about this. Case in point: we had some sever winter weather over the weekend. It started Friday night, and proceeded to get nasty Saturday and into the night. We had all types of precription, the worst being sleet. We even had a flash of lightening, then a loud clap of thunder. Our power went out twice, only briefly though, but the lights kept dimming, so we turned everything off, and just listened to the radio. I had all my flashlights, hurricane lamps, and candles on standby. I had done up all the dishes and filled up extra containers of water. I even ran the vacume over the rugs. (Don’t ask me why I did that. I felt compelled to do so.)
As the evening wore on, we listen to the sleet beat against the windows, and groaned in our boredom. I asked Hubby what he would do if we had to live that on a daily basis due to mandatory SIP. He just looked at me and rolled his eyes. Yea, I agree. It would be a novel idea for awhile, than the boredome would start in with the kids. Hubby would be next. I would just have a mental melt down from the stress of it all. I know myself. You can sperate kids for just so long, until there’s nothing left to do(but push’em out the door!) Seriously, that’s what I would want to do. I honestly don’t know how I would handle it. I have ways of dealing with life now, but goodness, we’re talking a 24 hour ordeal, no space.
It was also discussed if we should be out on our property, those of us out in the rural area. That is a very good question, because if your seen by others passing by, looking for someplace to go, or food, your a target. So that is something else to consider. I would take the risk and go out. I would have to. Instead of taking the dog out for bathroom duty, I’d take myself out just for the peace and quiet!!! 😉
Would you break SIP/JAH?
Fot the most part, we on the fluwiki said no, we would break it. We agreed that it would have to be an extreme emergency before we left our home/families. The general consenus was that lack of food and water would force one to break SIP. Breaking SIP for a medical emergency would be useless, as there wouldn’t be any help available(under our extreme idea of a flu pandemic and mandatory quarantine.) Hospitals would be over ran with inner city residence, and if your rural, risking your life to drive to the city could be deadly. (Car jacking, ect.) But as human nature mandates it, us parents would risk our life to take our sick child anywhere to get medical help. I even include myself in that. Knowing my child wouldn’t have a chance in hell to get medicine, I’d still risk it. If I was fortunate enough to get her help, I probably would be contaminated, and I would want to go home. Do I go home and infect my Hubby, and other child? What should I do? Or visa versa. It’s Hubby who takes the child for medical help, do I let him back in? I suppose it’s really a no win situation. You do whatever you have to do, and pray with every fiber of your being that it works out. That’s why being prepared is so important. Having over the counter medicines in your stock is a life line, just as your food and water.
We spent today digging out. It was about 24 hours of SIP for sever winter weather. I thought some more about pandemic flu SIP. I don’t know of it will ever happen in my life time, there is no way of knowing. There is no way of knowing what is going to happen in my lifetime, but I have a chance to prepare my family. Even if pandemic flu doesn’t happen, we still need out stock. Natural disasters/emergencies happen all the time, and some last for longer than 3 days. I’ve been through one that lasted 13 days with no power and no phone, no travel. That was mandatory SIP by the order of the county sheriff. We had so little that we were forced to look for food and water. That was a ugly scene as everybody was too, and then you realy see just how ugly humans can be, when trying to survive. I vowed that we wouldn’t be in that situation again.
There are many websites for resources, and help in where you should start in your preparations. I will be adding a “Websites for Prepardeness” list. I have this on the Fluwiki as well. I encourage everyone to take action and be prepared for not only pandemic flu, but emergencies and the high cost of food. Your stock can literally become a food pantry in times of financial crisis. I’ve done it many times. Once Hubby saw how many times it’s saved our butt, he’s happy I’m doing it. My stock is gold in this household. I don’t care how rich you are, when a crisis hits, that plastic is worthless, and my stock is priceless!
If you are looking for a place to start learning about H5N1(aka bird flu), the fluwiki and PFI are two excellant places to go.
Until next time,
I had never heard of “pandemic flu” or “H5N1.” I had heard about “bird flu” a couple of years ago on t.v. They were showing quiet a bit about this “bird flu”, then suddenly, I didn’t hear anything about it for months. So one night while I had some free time on the net, I googled “bird flu,” and found alot of info. Turns out, that “bird flu” is H5N1, a deadly flu virus. I was hooked, and had to know more. I stumbled upon a forum, the Fluwikie2, over a year ago
What is bird flu?
This is the most common question asked.
H5N1 is bird flu, or rather flu. H5N1 is another strain of the flu. What makes this strain of the flu so deadly for both birds and humans is that this is the high pathenogen H5N1. All poultry carry the low path N5N1, and poses no threat to the bird or human.
In 2003, H5N1 or bird flu, first showed it’s ugly head in Asia, infecting thousands of poultry, mainly chickens, killing them quickly. Quarantine and disenfecting did not seem to make a difference in slowing down this virus. It continued to spread and infect thousands more birds.
Since 2003, bird flu has spread to several countries, not only infecting and killing millions of poultry, but also infecting humans. At present, humans contracting bird flu is primarilary from infected poultry, however that has started to changed. Over the past year, the virus has mutated into several strains, Indonesia being hit the hardest with total human deaths from bird flu. Since last year, there have been several clusters of H-H (human to human) infections of this virus. This has caused great concern in the pandemic flu world, as the virus is just a step away from becoming sustained H-H-H. When and if this happens, the world will have another pandemic flu on their hands. The last world wide flu pandemic was in 1918. Think for a minute, how a pandemic would change your life, your childrens life, and life as you know it.
Right now, The World Health Organization (WHO), has the pandemic alert level at 3,
At the present moment, Indonesia, Egypt, are the hot spots, with Indonesia continuing to increase in number of human deaths. Egypt reported it’s first human bird flu death last year, and has continued to increase in human deaths numbers.
The fluwiki, http://www.newfluwiki2.com/frontPage.do is an international website dedicated to bringing information about pandemic flu, prepardness to the people.
I am a part of the Indonesian translators team. Each day we combs our assigned Indo news sites for news of bird flu. I have 9 that I go through. I post my translated articles on the fluwiki, and then again at http://www.singtomeohmuse.com/ commonly know as PFI: Pandemic Flu Information forum. The information on both of these sites is invaluable. I encourage you to check out both.
Where to begin
That is another common question. And I say, read as much as you can about this virus. Learn. You have to know what your dealing with in order to prepare your family. Once you have done your homework, then you create a stock, starting with 2 weeks min., of food and water, and build from there. This is a link found at the fluwiki2 that will help guide you: http://www.getpandemicready.org
It can be overwhelming
This can be a bit overwhelming. I personally went on am emotional rollercoaster, and had to decide if I wanted to stay dedicated to this cause of watching this virus, keeping my household prepared, and being the first at having a heads up if this goes pandemic. There really wasn’t any doubt for me. I knew I had to stay. I’ve just learned how to put it in the back of my mind, and live my life. It doesn’t consume me like it use to. People do go through this at first. It a normal response.

We are always needing more help for translators. There are still lots of Indo newspapers that need looking after, and there are not enough volunteers. The Egypt team needs help combing through the Egyptian newspapers and translating.
I hope you take a look around PFI and the newFluwiki2. I couldn’t begin to cover all the material that’s contained in those two sites. The third site, where I started is the old site(the fluwiki has since moved) is here: http://www.fluwikie2.com/index.php?n=Forum.Forum This site is chuck full of so much info. Sadly, this site will be gone come June 1, and all that great info, lost forever. Please take advantage of it while you still can.
